I wrote a post last night but it was tainted by beer!

I am looking for a way to get small sections of audio out of a larger buffer into either smaller buffers or to be saved as lots of individual aiff files.

I am recording an instrument into a buffer which is recording the whole time. The instrument only plays sporadic, short(2-3 seconds) melodic fragment. Is there a way for these short sections of sound in the main buffer to be saved as aiff files or re-recorded into smaller buffers immediately after they have been played?

If there was an object which could tell me the point within a buffer where the onset and offset of each sound occurs i could do what i want to do, however the only way i can find to get buffer to tell me a location inside itself is to open up its waveform and scrub over it with the mouse.

Please help me if you can, i am certain what i want to do can be done but i cannot work out how on earth to do it!
