If not, how about a way to have an mp3 to wave converter?

If you take a look at the help file for the buffer~ object, you'll notice a message called "import." Read up on that message in the refpage - it'll tell you the important things that you need to know (there are some things you should keep in mind when working with it....).

the only thing is I want to be able to load full songs and when i try and import a song it doesn't load the full song.

I have been learning max for a little bit, and am pretty new to the msp side so i might be missing a simple thing. Do I need to specify the length of the song in buffer's argument?

I want to be able to just load a new song when eveer I want and have basic transport control over it (stop, start, volume, etc)

Check the reference page, which will let you conclude that

will import a file, starting at time 0, resizing the buffer to match the length of the file.

 - the vinyl+software bundle will get you externals that play mp3s in realtime from disk - no importing necessary. They can be a bit clumsy to work with, but it's not too hard to patch an abstraction so it works more like sfplay~
