Hello folks,

This is my first post here and although I’ve watched from the sidelines and taken a lot of good tips from here to use in my Max projects I’ve to date been happy enough to watch and use the tutorials, but now I have a question! First off though thanks to all those who have unknowingly helped with my explorations in Max/Msp so far you don’t know who you are.

Anyway my question is this – will the Rane Serato scratch live audio interface work with Ms.Pinky Maxi patch? I don’t want to buy an unnecessary interface if the Serato one will relay the signals sufficiently for me. I haven’t purchased Ms.Pinky yet and I kind off want to the hard ware sorted before buying the records. The Serato interface has four inputs and 8 phono outputs but will they only work with serato?? the mind boggles:)

Thanks for reading..

Well, as far as I can tell, Ms.Pinky takes an audio input
that is the output of your turntable. The turntable is playing
an Ms.Pinky encoded vinyl disc. The Ms.Pinky Max object then
decodes this signal and gives you control outputs which you then
use in your patch. I am not sure if Serato understands the
encoding of Ms. Pinky discs.

I haven’t tried a serato interface, but I got Ms. Pinky working with my Tascam 122interface (only 2 ins and 2 outs), but it did not work with my protools Mbox2. I never figured out why either.

The audio on the Pinky vinyl encodes “timecode” and Max decodes that into “timecode”, so theoretically, it should work with any audio interface. Maybe you could write the Ms. Pinky people and see if they’ve tested it with Serato, that would give a definative answer.

Good luck, and if you get Ms. Pinky, have fun. Pretty neat toy. :)

Basically, *any* audio interface will work with the MsPinky vinyl, as
long as it or something else is taking the incoming RIAA EQd phono
signal from your turntable and turning it into a line-level signal.
Since you’ve got Serato Scratch, the phono pre-amplification is done by
your audio interface. All you have to do is get your Serato interface
working with Max, which shouldn’t be too difficult if you’re using
Windows given that there’s ASIO drivers for this device. However, if
you’re using OS X, apparently you are SOL because Rane claims it is “not
possible” to provide CoreAudio support for the SL-1 due to a hardware
limitation:

http://scratchlive.net/faq/#75045

The mind boggles, indeed.

If this puts you in the market for a new DJ-oriented audio device, I
would recommend the M-Audio Conectiv if you’re on a budget (the Torq
platform was built around MsPinky vinyl control) or the Native
Instruments Audio8 if you’ve got a bit more money to spend. I owned the
Conectiv, and for what it was (a low-end, plastic-encased, USB 1.1
M-Audio interface) it was decent enough. The NI Audio8 is in a whole
different class, much more professional. Both devices support CoreAudio
and ASIO.

HTH,

as a long time ms pinky user, i have been constantly on the lookout for a cheap usb or firewire interface that has only 4 ins and 4 outs and nothing else. no midi, no xlr, no headphone jack and no magic beat matching software.

unfortunately, the only product that does this (that i’ve found) is m-audio’s quattro device, which they’ve discontinued. you can still find these on ebay, but m-audio hasn’t released leopard drivers for them, and i have a feeling they will be shit without proper drivers.

until someone reads my mind and decides to make this device, i’m stuck using my motu 828, which works flawlessly, but is just too wide to carry around with me when i dj (what with 4 extra ins and outs and all). i wish i could just cut it in half…

if anyone knows of a device like this, or knows if the quattro works under leopard, i would love to hear it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I’ve got pretty much the same answers from the Serato forums. The interfaces will only work with Max on windows, boo to that shite. I’m using OSX though so that idea is out the window. Ms.Pinky do a nice little bundle on the M-audio conectiv and vinyl for $299. Think I’ll go that route for the moment until I get the pennies together for something else. I may sell serato yet, although it’d be nice to keep it. Has any body links to or videos of Ms.Pinky controlling Max in other areas than a dj set up? Not the one’s on the Ms.Pinky site, even though they are cool. I’m looking for more patches and ideas? I’m thinking of using it Ms.Pinky as part of my thesis and am looking for as much info as possible. Any more help appreciated…
