I have a patch in which the user is given the ability to change the number of voices a poly~ object uses, from 1 to 128. When set to one voice, usage is around 1%. When I first set it to 128 voices, usage is 70%. But then, if I send notes very fast (so that all the voices are playing at the same time), when I stop sending notes, usage drops to about 15%.

It seems to me that when the number of voices change, the newly created voices are automatically "playing", without waiting to actually be called. Is there anyway to work around this?

probably. but i think it wil be easier for you to control the number of instances from outside.

what is the way you usually use to turn an individual instance/voice off? signal or message?

with signal an instance could easily turn itself off after its been enabled.
