Just looking around to see if i can find a multi touch surface for use with max msp. I had a look at the ipad and well for what i am planning to use it for it seems completely over the top and well a little too closed in terms of software which can be loaded. instead i am trying to route out a touch screen monitor which can simply be used as an extension of my monitor space for my macbook. What i want is to have a basic ableton setup on one monitor whilst working with a multitouch monitor with max msp loaded for control reasons. Does anyone know of anything in this market. The screen must be no bigger than 15 inches at most (preferrably around 10 or 12 inches) as i want the unit to be portable for live playing.

with ipad you could use touchosc, you can buid there you own screen setups, and the interface looks great. although it has some limitations regarding to feedback (to show you for instance when a clip is launched or stoped, which is really necessary). but you can implementate this if you know working with max patches, as you can get the "launched, stoped" state of live clips and handle that info into max and... well, it can be done.

there´s also a very great app called "c74" that I think is the future of moving max to iphone (and so I hope moving it ot ipad), but it still needs a lot of work and leo seems to be so busy with some other things (come on leo!! we want c74 to update and reveal it´s inner potential!!!).

I am doing something similar. I currently have an Archos9 that is running Max runtime and it works great. Although the Archos9 is only single touch

it is a decent platform to experiment with.

It runs a patch that I built that talks to my Max studio PC via OSC.

I can then control my Max PC environment in any way I want remotely.

Or I can take my tablet on the go and have a mobile version of

my composition environment (with audio output). I can't wait for

the HP Slate to arrive. Being able to run Max on my tablet is huge,

and with mutitouch it should be even better.

I think PC tablets are the way to go, the freedom and flexibility

that Max gives you goes far beyond anything TouchOSC can do, or any

it seems then that a tablet or netbook is the way to go. i must admit i was hoping for something a little less complex in terms of the unit. i looked aroud and found one or two smaller touch screen monitors and plenty of larger scale multi touch monitors too. however nothing in the region of the 12 inches im looking for. i guess then my optins are reduced really to something like the hp slate or the joo joo

Jazzmutant has just release a beta version of the Mu, an Ableton Live Controller for the Lemur.

I don't try it but i think it will be a robust, multitouch but also expensive solution to control Ableton.

well there are a few multi touch screens which are just normal computer screens. they would be cheaper than forking out for a complete system, like the ipad. although it does depend on your specs or what you would be using it for...
