Right I've gone through most of the tutorials now, and I'd thought I'd start to get my hands a little bit dirty. I've made a patch which converts the computer keyboard keys to midi note data to drive VST's (nothing complicated). I've only had programming experiance with Reaktor, and would really like some feedback to if this is the best way of doing this. I've found forum feedback has been very useful in learning stuff (especially with the Reaktor forum), and I must say Ive learned a lot allready from just browsing this forum.

Things I would like to know just out of interest is:

I've had to use a lot of message boxes and toggles for this.. Is there a better way of doing this?

This uses the < and > keys to inc/dec transpose octaves, and the way it does it is taken from the way I would do this in Reaktor. Is there a better way to do this in MAX?

Is there a way of sending out a bang when pasting?.. this patch uses a 'loadbang' to initialse the 'accum' which doesnt seem to send a "bang" when pasting this patch from compressed text data. Hence you may have to double click the 'loadbang' when the patcher is locked to get the accum working.

I wouldn't say that your patch is wrong or right, I would just show you 

a different way of doing it (which is always good IMHO).

This is by design. You'll have to double click on loadbang/loadmess to  
generate this on New From Clipboard.

Definitely looking at [coll] will help get rid of all those individual note triggers. I have a similar abstraction that I use for testing synth patches when I'm on the move.

It uses the left and right arrows to scroll through octaves and up and down keys to change velocity. I use it instead of [notein]. It's by no means perfect but it uses a few gates so that you can't accidentally trigger a note on while changing octave and stop it receiving it's note-off. I keep meaning to add a [poly] or [pack] the messages for working polyphonically but haven't yet. Feel free to deconstruct it and see where it gets you.
