We are currently investigating an issue with pipe when being cleared
from the low priority thread while handling many events in the high
priority thread and sending to makenote, which might be exposing a
more general issue. So far this is the only example I have which can
reproduce the problem. However, if you are able to strip down your
patch at all and generate any steps to reproduce, it would help us
investigate your issue. Without examples and reproducibility, it is
very difficult for us to speculate what any given problem may be let
alone a fix.

One developer tool on OS X which can be used to track this sort of
spinning is ThreadViewer, which is part of Apple’s great performance
monitoring toolset: CHUD. If you can install this on your machine and
look at the thread listing which has start or main at the bottom of
the stack view, and tell us what the stack looks like, we can perhaps
get a better idea of why the app is frozen in the main UI thread.

Download and documentation info on CHUD and Thread Viewer is below.

Hi Don,
Try these steps:

1. Start MaxMSP
2. Open Thread Viewer and click the Attach button. Select MaxMSP from
the popup window.
3. Open your patch and get it to the part where things are acting up.
4. Press the pause button on Thread Viewer and click on the bottom line.
5. This should display a list of things in the right part of the window.
6. Copy this stuff and send.

Thanks for taking the time to investigate this further. Yes, this
would appear to be essentially the same deadlock issue I am seeing w/
r/t clearing the pipe object from the low priority thread. Hopefully
we will have a fix for it soon. In the meantime, you may be able to
avoid by turning overdrive off and/or disabling one of the CPUs (use
the processor control panel installed with XCode to disable the
second core)
