Hi I’d like to get a VJ program called particleview that uses openGL to feed into jitter,
is there a way to grab opengl from other programs?
been thru the jit.gl.sketch help, and the redbook but cant put my finger on the object which would do this.

thank you!

a screen capture technique to capture the video from the vj program would work if anyone knows of a way to do that. I’ve been messing with jit.qt.grab in openGL, it captures live video from a webcam and pastes it across openGL objects & textures, but would it be possible to capture video on my screen and input that with jit.qt.grab to jitter’s openGL?

k got it going thanks so much for the advise,…
it looks like there’s a slight lag going with jit.desktop
like the frames/second isn’t fast enough, is it possible to grab quality video into the jit.pwindow ?
?
thanks so so much,

I guess it depends in which kind of hardware you are using. This is exactly the same problem when you are using capturing software and the image ‘stutters’. From my experience only really good hardware computers can handle the kind of setting you are suggesting in one single computer.
Perhaps the best approach would be to capture the footage you are planning to use and then manipulate it inside jitter. By browsing the web page of particleview i have the impression that it is possible to achieve similar effects by using all kinds of tricks inside jitter: i would suggest studying shaders for the texturing and jit.expr and jit.mesh in order to apply numerical filter to matrices. Besides those tools you have javascript and java which are useful for generating particle systems and applying physical models. Also, if it happens that you are using OSX you can take a look into quartzcomposer which generates similar effects: you can import the patches into max by using DIPS:

hope it helps!

I remember when using Camtasia for screen captures, it recommended disabling hardware acceleration on your graphics card for best performance. Not sure what that would do to the jit.gl objects and jit.desktop though.

You could also grab the full-size image and downsample by a half in each direction, might be worth the tradeoff in quality vs. speed?

Probably there are other optimazations for this too, check vade’s article on this:
