[OT] mac pro processor upgrade

August 11, 2006 | 6:39 pm

I’m planning on buying a Mac Pro, but I am a little surprised with the price
of the processor upgrade from 2.66 to 3.0MHz. For that same amount you can
buy 2 new 3.2MHz Xeon processors in any computer store.

Now that Mac uses widely available Intel processors, would it be possible to
upgrade the processors yourself later on? Or is Mac smart enough to prevent
this in some way?

I would imagine that it will be possible to upgrade the Mac Pro, and
that you check with http://www.xlr8yourmac.com to find out user reports
about this.

I was wrong about the Xeon price, as I confused EM64T with Woodcrest
processors. I guess the price apple charges is reasonable after all. About
the upgrading… I did find info on how to replace the processor in a mac
mini, so I guess it will be possible with mac pro too.

upgrading the mini mac. it’s good to know that it’s likely possible. i can’t
wait to own a mac, at last:-)
