overide assistance

January 23, 2007 | 5:50 am

I’m looking for a method to replace assistance info with the output of said
outlet.
example:
when over an outlet i press the ctrl and instead of showing me assitance
info i get that outlets (active state, type and one line post)
i think it’ll be helpful in debugging. any idea how that could be
implemented without a feature request?

A number of objects provide other approaches to debugging aids. Some
people implement a special debug message (‘dump’, ‘printall’,
‘tellmeeverything’, and my favorite: ‘tattle’). Litter Power objects
respond to double-click and by posting all internal state information
to the Max window. Providing state information in response to Get
Info… is another option.

All of the above are pretty easy for any external to do with the
current API. Your idea would require a modification to the Max API,
because Assistance is controlled by the Max engine. On second
thought, it could be done with the current API, but it’s a bit of a
hack.

Also, including some of the information you ask for could be done
with standard Assistance, if external authors feel so inclined.

The upshot is that most of this sort of thing is the responsibility
of externals authors.

Nice idea, but only possible with a feature request. It needs to store
somehow that data which requires extra memory/overhead. I’d only like it
as a sort of "debugmode" of Max, but hey it would be convenient for
quick checks….
