Nope. The correct extension is now .maxpat. It’s also a different file
format, so you can’t save a patch in Max 5 and use it in Max 4.

If so, one could distribute a help patcher to mediate the export to Max 4.

Scanning through the docs now, I don’t immediately see how to extract the connections, but I guess it’s in there somewhere?
