pimp my heartbeat

Got wind of this off of Engadget – uses Max/MSP to process the
signals apparently:

Check out the video that shows a demo of the software – now if they
only *sync’d* the beat of the music to the heartbeat also, instead of
just tailoring the BPM of the song to the heartbeat… THAT would be
cool!

I did this a few years ago by taking apart my pulse-monitor watch. At the time, I didn’t use Max, but wrote a MIDI-program to use the resulting information. It worked for much more than just the heart; I could trigger and control things with most muscles on the body, using EKG pickups which you can buy in any apotheke.

We are gearing up to do the same piece again in a few months. This time I want to use several pickups. Back then, I had done some research into cheap chips which I could use, but never got around to buying one. Has anyone here had experience with these chips? (I know about the commercial offers for expensive sensor setups, but I want to (as always) build my own. There are dedicated IC’s which do exactly this, and are relatively inexpensive.)
