Hi,

Right off the bat, I’m REALLY new to this software – like about 5 minutes and I’m pretty much evaluating the demo version to see what it does.

Obviously I’ve got Max 6.0 ( Windows BTW ) and I’m trying to get started with some pitch detection elements.

I’ve read that fiddle~ is a good place to start but this seems to be only available on Mac but there’s another option called Pitch~ and yet another called ~Sigmundm, both of which I’ve managed to find pc versions of.

Unfortunately, I’ve tried dropping these into the C:Program Files (x86)Cycling ’74Max 6.0Cycling ’74max-externals folder and also setting the Options/File Preferences to a seperate folder where I’ve downloaded these files and I just can’t appear to find them in the object explorer.

I’ve also tried dragging the files directly into the main patcher window which seems like it should work because the context of the cursor changes to ‘copy’.

As I say, I’m very much new to Max/MSP so I’m probably just completely getting the wrong idea but I’d really appreciate it if someone could tell me where I’m going wrong.

Many thanks,

Rob.

Hi Rob,

There is an included object that does pitch detection called fzero~…I recommend giving it a shot to begin with.

That’s great advice Jeff. Many thanks.

In the meantime, just so I can understand, if anyone has any ideas about my importing problem, then please do let me know.

Thanks again Jeff.

Hi Rob, sorry about that, didn’t mean to blow off your original question. The term “import” doesn’t really pertain to objects in Max. As long as an object (say sigmund~) is in your search path you should be able to use it by creating a patch, creating a new object in that patch and then typing the name (sigmund~) into that object. Sigmund~ comes with a help patch that opens right up for me in Max 6, but I’m currently on a Mac, not a Windows, machine.

It’s all good Jeff and I appreciate the headsup.

Seems I’ve got another question now but I’ll open another post for that.

This is the WEIRDEST thing I have ever seen. I have been using pitch~.mxo for the longest time and today, suddenly – it is grayed out in Max. When I try copying it from my other machine (by ANY method) it turns the file into a folder that is then unreadable by Max.

What on earth is going on here? Does anyone have any clue? The only thing I have done recently is download the everythingCNMAT folder. Would that have anything to do with it? Any help gratefully appreciated – I have performances, talks etc coming up…

@warp1: a .mxo *is* a folder. Always. Just like applications, dashboard widgets, and lots of other things are in reality folders. They just have a little bit of information that tells the Finder to display them as a single object.

Off the top of my head, I’d suggest launching Disk Utility, select the First Aid tab, and try running Repair Disk Permissions (or Repair Disk, if it’s not a boot partition). If you’re feeling cautious, try the Verify option before launching the repair. But I don’t know exactly what’s caused the problem and I can’t guarantee that this will fix it. Good luck.

I’m having this same issue on Mac OS X 10.7.4 Lion. The .mxo is showing up as a folder rather than a file format, and Max 6 is not acknowledging its’ existence. I used pitch~ in Max 5 for ages with no issue, and now it’s not showing up in Max 5 either!

Specifically, it seems that when I fired up Max 6, the external itself (not the helper .pat file) was reorganized into a folder called “5.00(INTEL).”

Does anyone know how to get numeric values from an audio file by using the pitch object on max 6?

I think I have managed to do it but the numbers don’t always change.
