This may be a well-know issue to non-newbies, and I can work around, but I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm that I'm not doing something silly (assuming I'm not). The patch below writes numbers to the first N sample positions in a buffer, using peek~, starting from position 0. If you open the buffer you can see the numbers 1/N to 1.

If you then read the buffer using play~, then with 0 on the input it reads the 2nd sample, with a time of 1 sample period it reads the 3rd, etc. With a time of N-2 sample periods on the input it reads the last sample. There doesn't seem to be any way that play~ will read the 1st (0-position) sample. Is this known behaviour?

I'm using Max4Live, but I presume the same happens in MaxMSP.

I'd be grateful for any assistance/comments.

I don't have my Max machine at present but I think interpolation using play~ still has the offset - the data for sample #0.64 is interpolated between the 2nd and 3rd sample values, not the 1st and 2nd as you'd expect.

And the effect does happen at audio frequencies - that's how I found it. I'm writing to a buffer and then play~ing it into a looped delay line using a line~. The line~ starts at 0, but the 1st sample value doesn't get play~ed, which leaves a click in the looped audio. (I confirmed this by record~ing to another buffer.) I could send the patch later if you like.

Actually, I could avoid this issue altogether if there were a way to write directly to a tapin~'s delay line (after freezing) using something like peek~. I don't suppose you might know a way to do this?
