please allow me to vent my spleen
I f**king detest Windows Vista.
With a passion you can right now only dream of. For f*ck sake – I’m 2yrs into my PhD and I’m supposed to rely on this, this, feeble stillborn car-crash of an OS?
No, I mean I physically want to rip my HD out and start again. What a useless, temperamental, intransigent, half-baked pile of SH1T, my experience with which is an execrable litany of failures.
Admin would chastise me for taking up 200 f**king PAGES of web space with my reasons.
Ya Vista was a bit of disaster for Windows but I liked XP at the time and I even prefer some aspects of Win7 to OSX but it’s true you have just about the worst OS going – sucks to be you ;)
First of all the shit ain’t hot if you ain’t got that kick and snare going. You gotta have that melody, don’t go too hard on the sounds. Keep that shit funky. If it ain’t mixed down don’t put that shit out there. Make sure you got some good breaks in there and you all the way nice. Get at ya boy with any questions or any info.
very fond memories
Lion? Has it bedded down to a degree of stability and compatibility yet?
New laptop shopping tmoro
I’m sorry but I have used a laptop with vista and he worked all the time liked a charm…. Maybe I did something right but everything have worked perfectly all the time. I was sad to know that I had to change laptop recently because I use jitter a lot and it required opengl 1.4 and I was limited to open gl 1.2. But beware of the windows 7 IMO it’s worst than vista… Just give you an example : my Novation Launchpad that works perfectly with windows vista doesnt work under windows 7….
Good Luck Ben
Microsoft are really twats-they assume you’re stupid and misname everything in order to "help" you..I call this the Simonyi effect
It’s not a "home" network, it’s a trusted network FFS..I could go on for ages about their idiotic design decisions, but bottom line is that Windows should’ve just been a reskin of Unix.
Shit is busted and needs to be rewritten from the ground up
OS X Lion is currently playing nice with all my apps including Max 6.
The last big hurdle for me with Lion was Safari. In my use, it was a POS until the most recent update to 5.1.4. They had an extremely brain-dead cacheing scheme that was basically just broken if you like to run with a bunch of windows & tabs open. I tend to make a pass with my RSS reader and open anything I want to read in a new Safari window. This often leaves me with 30-40 windows open. Safari up until the Lion version handled this gracefully. Now with 5.1.4 its gotten mostly back to where it was, or at least I’m no longer cursing Safari with every breath.
I have Win 7 at work, I think it’s a great step forward. Haven’t had too many issues with it, no more than I ever had with XP. The file browser and taskbar are much improved.
I skipped over Vista, guess that was the thing to do ;) though as we can see, mileage varies…
As a student can you buy a cheap licence for an upgrade to windows 7? If you c an afford it do it, the improvements will be huge.
Hey, that’s good to know.
For the time being the finances allow this: cheap-ish laptop (as long as it can handle Max5.1.9 it’ll do) with OEM Win7; then end of PhD is the time for………Ubuntu or Lion.
The rule with Windows releases is only to install every other one, seven was good, vista bad, xp good (by the time it got to service pack 2), 2000 bad (no driver support), 98SE good, 95 bad.. you get the picture.
I’m only updating from xp to seven for my DAW now. Will skip 8 for the above reasons and probably get 9 sometime around 2020.
Given a severely limited budget I went for an Advent (brand loyalty) N2 dual core Athlon 2.3GHz (8G ram) and I’ve spent the last day rooting around msconfig in Win7 – can see no major difference apart from: User Account control is less intrusive, boot up time is lightning fast. Why oh why do Microsoft insist on installing and allowing free rein to a host of ‘Network Client/Admin’ type Services that someone who buys a < £400 HOME computer with a HOME version of the OS will clearly never need?
AVG and CCleaner seem happy so far, downloading Max as we speak. Fingers crossed etc.
