please help me find a certain setting

Hello. I am desperate. I don’t know why but since a couple of days max is behaving strange ans i can’t figuere it out why.
if i create a new object and type “t”because i intend to write e.g.”t b i” i get some crude suggestion like textbutton. I am used to and i like these suggestions. But what’s new to me is that when i type spacebar, i automaticly accept the suggestion! And i need this a lot with “s”, “r” “i”, and all our abbreviation-friends. I hope you understand my problem and can help me.
PS: it is NOT the “object box autocompletion” it seems to me, since if i disable it i don’t get any handy suggestions at all anymore..
Or is it?

spacebar should do the job , weirddd …. was everything ok few days before ? .. if no one will be able to help then you might be forced to reinstall whole app :/

did you checked in other programs ? got chance ? the same with google suggestions (search bar) ? im just wondering if this is system issue or just an app

Yes everything was ok, and i don’t remember adjusting anything in prefs, also i didn’t update or anything alike.
if i type “n”for newobj, followed by “t “
I end up with “textbutton ” or whatever i did recently with t-objects.. :)
its terrible! I have to type “t”,backspace,” b i” eg.. but most of the time i just end up creating textbuttons and get mad.

please report if u get the same with your internet browser , google search suggestion and stuff like that .

ps: yes this must be really annoying .
i had such problem before but it was global ,it acted like this everywhere

im sorry for you :/
you know ,im surprised many times with strange things , weird behaviours …but only if the system works online . ive separated my works from the internet . got two separated bootings ,one for works ,second for the internet . could be problematic i guess ,so i decided to use laptop for the internet and other one for work .

im also creating system DISK IMAGE’s so i can revert to the virgin state (with all apps and settings) within 10 minutes if something going wrong . this is actually the best practice ive learned to prevent many problems – be able to refresh the system without reinstalling anything .

i know it wont help you but its a good thing to consider ,as it was in my case .

anyway i hope someone knows better

I do not have this problem on my computer — Mac OS 10.7.4, Max 6.0.5. Here’s a possible workaround till the problem is solved: type “n” for new object, type “t” for the trigger object, type the down arrow key which will select the first item in the popup menu which is t.

@ christopher, the first item in your popup menu is “t”?? in my case it’s textbutton, which is why i have the problem, maybe. als i don’t get “sel” in my popup menu, i only get select and so on.. maybe max just fogot all the abbreviations??
@Kris, thanks for the condolencies, but there must be a simpler solution for this. Everything else works just fine. First step may be reinstalling max before reinstalling the OS. (btw windows machines i am working with never see a glimpse of the internet, but i have good experience with Mac..)But i thought it should be some preference-setting i missed, is it not?

ive been checking the prefs , cant see anything like that :/ .
i would like to change some hotkeys/shortcuts , i will be forced to dig into the “.json” files for the max . it might be your case too but i would be more happy to reinstall the max . good luck . and backup your OS after all !!!!

You are a nice fellow. Changing hotkeys isn”t so hard. Anyways, i’m quite sure it won’t help in my case. Maybe deleting the prefs file will do it, but deleting prefs has become an annoying 3 months or so routine (for ever different reasons).. i’d like to avoid that. No other ideas anyone? Cycling?

Quite a strange problem indeed. I assume Max 6?

Because the order also doesn’t make any sense. To my knowledge you get suggestions based on alphabetic order; even in 6. So it would make more sense if it would come up with ‘tab’, ‘table’ or ‘tan’ than ‘textbutton’. Even ‘text’ would come before ‘textbutton’.

SO I wonder if the sorting order could have something to do with all this (if such a thing is available of course).

I think it doesn’t come up with a alphabeticly ordered list, but a list ordered by how often you use objects, or what you used last, beginning with the letter. In my case this was textbutton. But now, if i create a table object and afterwards try creating an abbreviated trigger “t ” i end up with a table, since it’s the first suggestion.
therfore, i still think max somehow forgot the abbreviations. do you get abbreviations in your popup menu or only complete names as “trigger” “select”"send”etc etc?? i don’t.

Have you tried rebuilding your database?

Put this into a message box: ; max db.reset
then click it.

Thanks chris! Interesting suggestion, what kind of problems does this usually solve?
Anyways, reinstalling max did the trick, sorry for the noise, quite a simple solution. But as i mentioned, i was sure it wasn’t a bug, but a setting.
