Please point me in the right direction

So, I’m taking a class where we’re using Arduinos and Max MSP to create an art piece that involves interaction with an environment. My project plan is (I thought) pretty simple, but I don’t understand Max MSP at all and can’t seem to teach myself through tutorials like my prof wanted. Here’s what I’m trying to do, if you could post links to tuts or suggest patches, anything really, it would help a lot:

I’m trying to take sensor input (PIR motion sensor) from the Arduino and use Max to turn a sound file on or off based on whether motion is detected or not. I originally wanted it to fade in and out, but if I can just get it to make noise when the sensor goes off, that’s enough for now.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi,

What is the thing that you can’t do? I mean you won’t get a patch
which does what you want just by describing it. People on the forum
will luckily give you some advices but they won’t do your job. I would
recommend following your teacher’s advice.

So can you grab the sensor information from the arduino? How do you
detect the motion? How doyou control the amplitude of your soudfile?

Best,
ej

http://www.arduino.cc/playground/Interfacing/MaxMSP

Then you will need a condition that says:

“if sensor is on then do a else do b”

From a digital pin, as long as you program the Arduino correctly then that’s already done.

Then in max the following objects are your friends:

sfplay~, play~, groove~, buffer~, dac~, *~,line~

With those objects you can easily build a system that triggers sound files with fades in and out.
