When I load a pluggo inside MaxMSP (say "Generic Effect.vst"), the CPUs dramatically burn a lot (up to 80% both) when I open the Pluggo's window while the "CPU Utilization" stays at 1-2% in "DSP Status".

Please, could someone confirm if it's only my setup, or not?

Here a patcher (the default device is "Soundflower (2ch)".

i get idle processor of around 80% on a macbook pro 2.16, but its an intel processor so perhaps its not quite a fair test...

Do you mean that when you open the "Generic Effect.vst" window, your CPU gauge stays at 20% ?

MaxMSP '%CPU' in "Activity Monitor" is around 64% here.

MaxMSP '%CPU' in "Activity Monitor" is around 64% here.

sorry was looking at the bottom of activity monitor... the maxmsp thread is at 40% with the plugin window open. hmmm... does seem high for such a simple patch???

the weirdest thing is that when i close the generic effect.vst, the maxmsp thread goes down to 20%!

(I forgot to report these last 2 values in my previous post.)

I chosen this Pluggo for its generic interface, no custom GUI, and available in the free Junior bundle.

Still around 60% on 2*2Ghz G5. Colossal!
Around 50% when turning off the audio.
And also 20% once closed the Pluggo's window, audio On. Strange!
Around 10%, window closed, audio Off.
(I forgot to report these last 2 values in my previous post.)

I just did the same test in AU Lab 1.0.3 / Pluggo "Generic Effect".

- %7.10, Pluggo Generic or Carbon view displayed;

- %1.30, Pluggo Generic or Carbon view displayed;

The problem seems to come from the way MaxMSP handles the interface.

This is a huge concern for the purpose of a real-time DSP environment.

Average %CPU, 'Audio Engine Running':
- %10.40, Pluggo editor displayed;
- %7.10, Pluggo Generic or Carbon view displayed;
- %6.80 window closed.

Average %CPU, 'Audio Engine Stopped':
- %4.30, Pluggo editor displayed;
- %1.30, Pluggo Generic or Carbon view displayed;
- %1.10 window closed.

All appears okay here.
