Radiohead tribute needs max msp programer

and you should look into max folder in the examples patch to the
ModSquad
(into the sequencing and loop folder).

That looks very similar to what it is applied to that guitar.

I remember there was on cycling74 website also an article-interview
about the radiohead guitarist…

I’m totally new to max/msp. In fact I never heard of it until a few months ago while researching Radiohead’s equipment.

I have messed around a little with max, but haven’t actually gotten any sound to work (probably because I have no idea what I’m doing).

Basically it sounds like it samples his guitar, and then plays it back at weird rhythms. Almost like delay, but weirder. Is the correct term for this “algorithm”? You can also hear this used on the album version of this song (Go To Sleep) off Hail To The Thief.

How my equipment is set up:

I am using a Vox Tonelab, which is my pre-amp and effects unit. It has an effects return & send, which is what I will use to patch my laptop into my guitar line.
My laptop is windows xp.

Where do we go from here? Let me know.

did you read tomgalileo’s posts above? that’s very helpful information and should get you well on your way. you might want to do some of the Max and MSP tutorials. They’re not difficult and will tell you what you need to know to get the program set up for your purposes.

Yes, the stutter effect! That is exactly what I needed.

Now a second question. I would like to have an effect that I can sample vocals and then I’d like to be able to play them forward and backwards. I’d like to be able to sample 4 times and choose which ones I want to play. Is this possible?

Radiohead is using the Korg Kaoss Pad (KP3), but I don’t have the 400 bucks to buy one right now, I just need something that can get me through the end of the year.

it’s not hard to built an live audio recorder. i built one several months ago for the end semester project, where i take a small pice of a trombone audio live, and played instantly, or when i wanted to, it was a simple purpose, for manipulating then later. for doing the “glitch” effects requires more programing. for what i saw in the youtube video, he manipulates a live recorded audio and played whit different speeds, and the “glitch” effects is done by simple sliding from normal speed to almost Zero ( 0 ) and back again. aparentely there is more other effects like filtering or vocoding ( i guess) and probably reverb and delay. whit a fixed BPM, is not so hard to program in max, only requires hours of work and pacient.

Here are my assets.

Laptop – 1 game controller

PreAmp/Effects box (vox tonelab), I have a patch set up for each song we play- also midi in/out – has effect send/return – & 2 expression pedals

Pre-amp runs to a 100w half stack.

If anyone has some ideas how to use these things to my advantage in this Radiohead Project, let me know. It looks like there are so many things you can do with Max/msp.

true, he did use kaos and kaos has built-in sampling with reverse which is what it sounds like at times(he mapped forward-playback to the upper portion of vertical axis on chaos and reverse-playback to the bottom portion of the vertical axis on chaos(or vice-versa)) and one could even use kaos as a midi controller to control the same in max/msp. but for the other videos where he’s sampling and triggering small segments of his guitar it’s likely to be the stutter~ object with peaklim~ for amplitude-detection-triggering or even triggered by foot-pedals(there are also standalone sampling foot-pedals with variable-length sampling which makes it possible for guitarists like Melt Banana’s Agata to get it all without any Max/MSP).
