Reading Materials Question
I was wondering if anybody could suggest appropriate reading materials for a beginner at Max and computer music in general. I just want to get more involved and don’t know where to start.
I heard that Roads Curtis, Computer Music Tutotial is quite good… any thoughts on that??
i would suggest "Electric Sound" by Joel Chabade. it gives you a good overview of history of electronic music in the last 100 years.
for max, i can only recommand reading the tutorials and Max Getting started PDF files delireved with the software.
the introduction of MSP gives you a good intro to digital Audio.
Peter Elsea’s "MaxTutors" are very good too, check them at :
there are tonns of other reads, cant list them out right now of my head .
i am sure you will receive much better recommandations from the rest of the community….
I guess it first and foremost depends on which area of music that interests you the most. (Don’t you just hate that answer). I know that Focal Press are release a number of study books in the audio range. I have found a number of their books quite useful. Among them Sound, Synthesis and Sampling by Martin Russ for Synthesis basics. Acustics and Psychoacoustics by David Howard and James Angus for many basic acoustic principles. Not to forget Computer Sound Design by Eduardo Miranda. The last one is a good discussion of _a lot_ of different synthesis techniques with software examples. A damn good resource. But I’m sure you go on Amazon and find tons more.
There is also a pink book specifically concerned with Max but I found nothing in it that wasn’t already covered by the Max tutorials. I think I have learned most from studying a principle of sound and then try and figure out how to do it in Max.
Those are my warmest recommendations. Good luck with it.
I’ve been using Mark Phillips’ Electro-Acoustic Music Primer successfully
for a couple of years. It is highly recommended from
It is a structured intro to basic concepts followed by some material
borrowed from the MSP tutorials and some more advanced examples.
Gary Lee Nelson
There have been many discussions on the list with reading list
recommendations. This is another one where searching the archives is
a hot tip.
