I would like to be able to record for long periods of time onto my hard disk (say 3 hours) and be able to play any section of this recording up until the last recorded sample while samples are still being recorded into the file.

Any thoughts? I had sfrecord~ create a file and sfplay~ open the file being recorded into but nothing would play.

from what I understand, header information which contains all the details about the sound file (sample rate, bit depth, format, etc.) isn't written until the end, making it impossible to read a sound file from the drive while it is still being written. Instead look into recording to RAM (record~, buffer~, play~, groove~, etc.).

It will only work with record~/play~ into a buffer. As memory is not so much an issue anymore, this does not create unsolvable problems. For 3 hours you would need less than 2 GB of RAM.

You still could limit the amount and save the content of the buffer to disk after maybe an hour, and then access the buffer and the files on disc at your will using play~ and sfplay~ mixed...

if you are using a specific sampling rate etc - you might be interested in opening up the file as raw data ----- look at the sfplay help patcher under --- more features and then =----- raw data and force header

you will have to regularly reload the file - if you need the most recent events, also use a buffer that is the same length as the interval at which you open the soundfile - also, as the soundfile grows in size, it may slow your patch down!
