recording mpeg2?

September 28, 2007 | 11:58 pm

I looked through archives and couldn’t find a definitive answer. Is there anyway to write to disc using jit.qt.grab with an mpeg2 codec? Apple’s mpeg2 codec is for decoding, not encoding.

Thanks.

sasha.

a better idea would be to record using apple intermediate codec, and
then render to mpeg2 from that.

Thanks, Josh. This is for a museum, and the setup is that the museum visitors will burn their movies to DVD using a kiosk backended to toast. Currently, the video input is through a Canopus and I am writing to disc using DV. Toast is doing the re-encoding to MPEG-2 and creating the VIDEO_TS folder, etc. It takes a dogs age for Toast to encode, of course.

Do you think re-encoding from the intermediate codec will be faster?

sasha.

it’s just a hunch. hdv (an mpeg2 format) is handled in imovie
through apple intermediate, so my guess is that it can be converted
in realtime.
