I'm new to Max/MSP and have only just started messing around with my MIDI keyboard. I was wondering if there was a way to get a value for the length of the note (time between the note on and note off messages) is there a function that does that?

If not is there a way of incrementing a counter which starts and then stops after that note, sets back to 0 and does the same for the next note?

Combining [notein] and [timer] can do what you want. A note with velocity > 0 is a note-on, velocity == 0 is note-off. You could use [if] or [route] to split note-on/off's from each other.
