I'm having a big problem with getting max and cubase speaking rewire together. When I set up max as a slave for cubase and switch on max' audio, it stays on for about 4 seconds, before switching itself off. Has anyone encountered anything similar, and know the fixes? I've tried changing the i/o vector size in max, made sure that both programs run with the same sample rate, etc etc., so I'm really lost as to what's going on here... It worked fine for a while, and then it just stopped working.

System specs: MacBook Pro 2.66 GHZ i7, OS 10.6.8, 8gb Ram. Cubase 6.0.3, Max 5.1.9

One more piece of info: The max window prints

ad_rewire: timeout waiting for audio to start

even with the transports running and, granted, no audio files running from max or cubase, but that's not really the point, is it? I'm running a patch with a few lfos sending midi-info to cubase.

Yeh i'm having the same problem with pretty much identical system specs as yourself except it's Max 5.1.8 and Cubase 6.0.0.

Rewire switches off in Max and the window says 'ad_rewire: timeout waiting for audio to start'.

It doesn't happen all the time though.. which almost makes it more frustrating.

Yes, that's the really annoying bit. Teasing you into believing that there is some little hope somewhere that it might work and then SLAM! the door in your face :-(

Same problem here with Cubase 5 and Max 5.

Sending midi from Max to Cubase stops after 10 seconds.

Max still sends the midi messages but Cubase stops receiving.

Need to restart both softwares to get 10 more seconds... annoying.

Will update to Cubase 6 next week and try Max 6 too, hope this helps.

Not sure if this is relevant, but try this:

Hit the "openpanel" message to see if it starts cubase in slave mode.

Make sure all other projects/patchers are closed before you paste this code.

Were all ReWire applications closed BEFORE you opened up your max project?

And were they still closed as you told your max app to open one of them in slave mode? [rewire~] seems to be very picky about this.

Same thing with Cubase 6.0.3 and Max 5.1.9

I am using Max as a slave with ad_rewire driver to send midi messages to Cubase - using noteout (ReWire 1 selected).

Selecting ReWire 1 in the input of the midi track in Cubase.

Max sends the midi messages to Cubase and it works, but after 20 seconds Cubase stops receiving.

When I try to record the incoming midi note messages in Cubase, it crashes.

I can't try the same thing in Live since I don't know how to receive midi from the ReWire Max slave.

If someone can help me here, I could figure out wether this issue comes from Cubase or Max.

Oh actually I just figured out it is impossible to receive Midi in Live from a slave ReWire application.

Sorry, I missed the part where you guys mentioned using max as a ReWire slave instead of a host.

Max 6 up and running, still no joy :-( getting exactly the same message: ad_rewire: timeout waiting for the audio to start....

FIXED! Max support came through and guided me to the right solution:

"When in doubt, you can always try to reinstall Rewire. Sometimes this helps to re-register applications as valid rewire devices. You can download Rewire here:
