i mean "scale" as in when you highlight an object and then go to the edit menu in max 5, you can make something very tiny and hide it next to another object....

You can scale by holding down the command key (mac) or control key (win) while you select one or more objects.

Just to clarify the information on this thread if you hold down shift while sizing an object it will constrain the sizing in such a way that it preserves the original aspect ratio. This only really applies to objects that are independently width and height sizable.

Holding down cmd (on mac) or ctrl (on win) while selecting one ore more objects is a shortcut for selecting the object(s) and then choosing the "Scale..." command from the edit menu.
