Semantics of "./" in search path?

A path beginning with ./ normally means that it’s relative to the current directory. When it’s used in a search path, I don’t know how to determine what the current directory is. Is it my home directory? Is it Max’s home directory? The directory containing the current patch? Somewhere else?
