I am almost positive that this is not possible, but maybe I am overlooking something.

Is it possible at all to send MIDI from a Max for Live device to a Track in Live, or to the entire live_set, without additional routing set-up in Live?

The use case is: I would like to record MIDI Notes into Clips. Doing so by calling functions on the playing Live Clip is very difficult since playing_position is reported inaccurately by [live.observer].

You can create virtual midi ins and outs in Max - they may help. I'm not sure if it would work in Max for Live, you may need to use Max too.

your M4L device could send data out of Live through UDP, and you could build a max patcher that receives it, and then sends it out on a virtual midi port.

your clip could record the midi notes from this virtual midi port.

It's messy and you should certainly make sure you don't get a feedback loop, but it may work.

Just wanted to get back regarding this, and thank you Basvlk - I did need Max standalone to build this, but the solution works. Unfortunately, the added latency rendered the solution useless for my particular application, but a good trick nevertheless! Using the [shell] external, the standalone Max patcher can also be launched automatically whenever the Max for Live device is loaded, providing for an almost-user-friendly way to fire MIDI data at Live ;)

That's a good idea - I've used the shell object quite a bit but never to launch a max patcher from within Live. Shame the latency was too high!
