Sending MIDI signals between apps w/ Max

December 24, 2007 | 5:45 pm

Hi all. I am trying to send midi signals generated in Max to Logic 8. I realize this should be a pretty basic thing but it’s stumping me: where might I look to see how this can be accomplished? Generating the signals w/ noteout and such is easy, but how can I route them to Logic?

If you double click (on OSX at least) on [noteout] or any other MIDI in/out object, a list will pop up of currently available MIDI devices. Choose "from Max/MSP 1" and choose the same as your MIDI input in Logic.

Also, if you want to build this MIDI output list into a UI element, you can set up a umenu like in this example patch:

max v2;
#N vpatcher 10 59 610 459;
#P button 97 38 15 0;
#P window setfont "Sans Serif" 9.;
#P user umenu 44 116 100 196647 1 64 132 1;
#X add "AU DLS Synth 1";
#X add "from MaxMSP 1";
#X add "from MaxMSP 2";
#P newex 44 36 48 196617 loadbang;
#P newex 44 59 27 196617 1;
#P newex 44 82 46 196617 midiinfo;
#P newex 44 147 43 196617 noteout;
#P window linecount 2;
#P comment 91 82 212 196617 when [midiinfo] receives a "1" message it outputs a list of current MIDI output devices;
#P connect 4 0 3 0;
#P connect 6 0 3 0;
#P connect 3 0 2 0;
#P connect 2 0 5 0;
#P fasten 5 1 1 0 139 139 49 139;
#P pop;
