Hello, I am working on a live rig which involves both a laptop running MaxMSP and outboard gear. I would like to use my DR770 drum machine to control the tempo of all the other devices (using MIDI beat clock). I have been able to do this using an old MX8 MIDI patchbay configured to take an incoming beat clock and mirror it out to all of the other devices, including the laptop.

However, I would rather drop the MX8 from the setup if possible, and use my MIDI interface instead. The theory is that I would send the clock signal to MAX (rtin), and then have MAX mirror it out the other ports on the interface.

The problem is I can't seem to find the object that will let me do this. I can use 'rtin' to receive the clock signal no problem, but I can't seem to find any sign of an 'rtout' object or its equivalent.

I should mention that I have tried using MIDI THRU ports, with almost no success. It seems for some reason (maybe only on some gear) that the beat clock signal does not get passed to the THRU port.

Devices with a "soft through" often don't pass the real time stuff.

The object you're looking for is midiout,

Going direct to midiout was actually one of the first things I tried, and it didn't work. I tried again last night, and also tried with a variety of devices and midi cables, but no love. I also tried opening the posted patch, editing the portname, but still nothing. The clock works fine when going directly from the master to the slave, but as soon as I put MAX in the middle, it doesn't work.

Basicly, I was using an rtin object to receive the sync from the master, and routing that directly to midiout (as well as a print object to confirm the clock signal was being received by MAX).

Obviously it could be something to do with my setup, but I tried so many controlled experiments and it really seems like the problem is that MAX is not sending out the sync signal.

Is that a patch that has worked successfully for you in the past?

Yeah. It's taken from a working project. I've used it to drive arpeggiators in external equipment, for example.

I saved your patch as ClockOut then used it in the patch below.

The rt messages don't seem to be getting to the IAC ports. I reckon

I should clarify. I am trying to sync other software on the same 

machine ... Finale, Digital Performer, Band in a Box. All of them

OK, this works for me in Max 4 with IAC buses. I can't see the 

difference between yours and mine but I'll study mine a bit more.

OK, this works for me in Max 4 with IAC buses.  I can't see the  
difference between yours and mine but I'll study mine a bit more.

Well, I'm not really sure what I was doing wrong, but I decided to try everything again last night and it worked right away in the first configuration I tried. I would feel stupid, but then I'd be letting the terrorists win. Instead I shall blame MIDI voodoo.

Anyway, thanks most kindly for your help Chris. This means one less piece of gear I have to haul around with me, which means less back pain for me. I don't know if that qualifies you as a doctor, but I'm pretty sure it does.
