has anyone here used the serial object in 4.6 on windows? it doesnt seem to be working for me at all, in the beta and full release - it freezes up my computer, actually. im using the a patch to control the monome 40h controller (also made by monome), using the FTDI serial to USB driver. was just wondering if this works for anyone else here, its very possible im doing something wrong as im no expert, but the same patch worked perfectly in 4.5.7. using 4.6 would be benificial to me because of the built-in UDP objects.

There were some changes made to serial between 4.5.7 and 4.6, 

although I never noticed any trouble. I will bring my Arduino (uses 

the FTDI driver, as well) with me to work tomorrow and test it out on

Testing with arduino appears to be working fine. I'll need some more 

information in order to pursue this further.

ok, im on a p4 2.66 dell inspiron 5100 laptop. ill post the patch, although im not sure it will really help w/o the box (the patch is open-source so i dont see any reason why the monome guys would mind).

any other information that would be helpful?

the patch is a simple qmetro polling a serial object.

on my xp system even the serial help patch lags the system. when i click the bang to report the most recent value, there is a substantial delay.

also, when the box isn't plugged in, and any old com port is selected, the same problem persists.

there's nothing fancy happening on the recently posted patch, nor on the ftdi hardware end. we're doing 115200 baud.

really? on our xp test system, a clean install with 4.62 always has a broken serial object.
