Is there a quality-difference between: number - mtof - cycle~ and number~ - mtof~ - cycle~? (number/number~ regulating the frequency of cycle~, a sine-tone oscillator)

The first example will cause clicks (typically one would insert a line~ before cycle~ to avoid the glitches).

IMS, the reason for using line~ at the intersection between the Max event-oriented world and the MSP signal-processing world is explained in detail in MSP tutorial 2.

thank you...but in this tutorial they only use line~ for amplitude and the regular numberbox for frequency, although I have seen it otherwise.

If you don't use number~ for amplitude you certainly get clicks, but as for the frequency I don't hear any difference..

sorry, you are right! I just had to slip a message "$i 50" between the numberbox and the line~ object. This is the way they should always present it in demo-patches.

An instantaneous change in frequency won't affect the wave form as radically as an instantaneous change in amp, but there is still an artifact in the sound you may want to avoid. OTOH, you probably want a shorter transition time for frequency changes than for amplitude changes (if you drag the frequency update out for, say, 200ms, it's going to start sounding like a sloppy violinist).

But it all depends on the sound you're after.

Yes you are right, if you scroll the numberbox for frequency rapidly up and down you don't get any glissandi if you don't use "$i 50" to line~ (50 for 50 ms transition time).It sounds more like S&H because so many values are missing. Now my patch sounds great. I do use shorter transition time for amplitude (10 ms) than for frequency update (20 ms) though.
