I just put Skype on my machine after not using it for years. If I try to run both skype and max/msp/jitter at the same time my machine reboots without warning, as though somebody pushed the computer’s reset button. Either program runs fine on its own.

The problem sounded similar to this:

http://www.cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&goto=98862&rid=0&S=669fa92670637b2759ec1049507a96dc

…so I followed the suggestions but it had no effect. My soundcard acts as several different in/out devices so I tried putting skype and max on completely separate devices, but no difference.

The machine is Windows XP pro, Max 4.6.3, Jitter 1.6.3, soundcard is Waveterminal 192-M.

Thanks for any tips.

It sounds more like Windows doesn’t like the two applications to have
access to the sound card at the same time… Might be machine
specific… (I have no problems with this, but I am on Mac… ;-)

… or use asio drivers.
… or directx.
if you’re really stuck on how to do so, do a google search for ASIO4ALL (though i’ve had some difficulties with that one, so i tned to just use the standard asio drivers since they support things like using multiple soundcards, having multiple applications using the soundcard at the same time, etc)
if it were simply a windows issue, i wouldn’t be able to use max while listening to itunes, which i do.

Thanks everyone, for the tips. Windows doesn’t have a problem with multiple apps using the sound card, though. In the original post, I was only mentioning that I had considered the possibility, and tested to eliminate it. Also, I had been using ASIO drivers, but I tried the standard ones too. No luck. I managed to solve the problem by using an older version of Skype, and now everything works fine. I’m still curious what was wrong though.
