This is a story which I am really sad to say is true:

I just reinstalled the system on my iBook. This evening, I reinstall MaxMSP 4.3.2 which I bought in 2004 from Cycling74, through a Danish music store. When prompted to authorize, I check my backup hard disk and find my old response code I got from Cycling74 back when I bought MaxMSP. It didn't work. Damn! I compared the old challenge code to the new one, and noticed that they wasn't similar. "No problem" I thought. "I'll just write to Cycling74 Support". And so I did. They refused to give me a new response. I told Support the old challenge and it's reponse. I gave them the serial number too. But still no luck.

In other words, I now own software which I bought and payed for but cannot use anymore. I can't afford buying MaxMSP again. This is really killing my mood.

Sorry for bringing this up on this forum. Have anyone else experienced this before?

i am sorry for you, but i am not sure it is something you should have brought up on the forum , as it is a private matter between you and Cycling. i am sure you could have worked things out with them. i have been around many situations which seemed at first problematic but had a positive outcome after some negociations/discussions which made me realize that Cycling is always willing to work things out.

You're right, I probably shouldn't. I was frustated. But then again, if this could happend to me, it could happend to you too. However, I did manage to solve things myself. The PACE anti-piracy is reading your system conf and creates a challenge corresponing to that. So I removed my RAM expansion, thus only having 256Mb RAM, as I did when I first installed MaxMSP. Now my response code is working. I have installed my RAM expansion again. This rasies a question: What if I buy a new computer and a new challenge is generated, requiring a new response. I am sincerely worried about this matter.

I have gotten quite a few responses from C74 over the years. I give a 

brief explanation of why when asking for the response, and never had any 

problems so far. Also, if I need one for a computer that will be used 

for an installation, I use to ask for a time-limited response, saying 

when it is OK for it to expire. I am quite sure that getting a new 

computer would be an acceptable reason for requesting a new challenge.

Yes, I have to say I've always been pleased with c74's speedy replies and general cooperation when dealing with new challenge/response problems or requests. I've had drives go down, upgraded machines, and needed authorizations for new laptops over the years and I've never had a problem. 100% good experience, thus far... and that "experience" started in 1997, so I'd say they're doing pretty well!

No surprise. Pace generates a unique challenge/response for every 

hard disk/computer in the universe. That's the whole point of their 

CP. New disk, then you need a new c/r. Or else you switch to iLok. 

That costs a few dollars extra but for your situation would save some 

That may be the crux of the difficulty. The current version is 4.6.x, 

and there was a paid upgrade in the meantime (4.5). It's even 

possible that Cycling '74 revised the response-generator when v4.5 

came out and their authorization people may have to spend an hour or 

three rummaging around to find a generator for 4.3.

However, I agree with other correspondents in recommending patience 

(and just a touch of insistence). I understand this is frustrating 

but keep the faith and you'll get it sorted out, I'm sure.

Psychologically this may not be the best time to recommend buying the 

upgrade, but it would probably sort this problem out faster than you

I can't imagine that Cycling74 wouldn't issue a new response in this case. Perhaps there was some miscommunication along the line?

Another approach is to keep your authorizations on an iLok dongle. I know dongles can be a PITA, but they allow me to use my Max world on a variety of computers with no hassle.

My first impression about all this proved me wrong! And I am sincerely happy to say so. This evening, I was contacted by Support. Things are working out.

speaking of "updates"... where's MaxMSP 5.0?

I hear it has a new interface capable of simply reading your mind, and there's a spoken text to C compiler -- you just tell it what you want the external to do... and that it also has tutorial patches for solving world hunger and for the redistribution of wealth. Oh, and the documentation is chanted, as an auditory hallucination each night at bedtime, by the voice of Cate Blanchett. Mind you, it will be a paid upgrade... ;-)

I never ever had any problems with reauthorization. Cycling was always

very helpfull and fast. You should really sort this out with the

support. There must be a proof of your ownership somewhere. If you

I never ever had any problems with reauthorization. Cycling was always
