So…

I have the option of buying this sony fingerprinter thing, for like $25…

But I REALLY want to use it as a human interface device….

I wonder if anyone here has used one, or connected to the hi object.

I think it would be really cool, considering you could alter a
performance based on the fingerprint info…

ANY experience with this thing??

Ok, heres another question….

I hooked the device up, didnt show in the hi menu.

Does anyone think that if I load up the software, will it make a difference?

Im not gonna bother if the concensus is that it WONT work.

This thing is looking less attractive by the second.

That depends a great deal on what the intended use of the software is: For instance, the “software” for the Griffin Powermate makes it output ascii – IOW: A very good thing for maxing…

from what i know of the puppy, is that its meant to interface with
the authentication subsystem of OS X, act as a ‘login hook’ for the
login window and be highly secure. Id suspect if it is designed well,
the information the device driver is handing off to the OS would be
highly secure and obfuscated – otherwise, if you think about it,
wouldnt it defeat the purpose?

who’d buy a fingerprint ID system to secure their infrastructure if
any old Max/MSP hack could intercept the data? ;)

no clue if im right, but just a hunch. Id seriously doubt its HID
compliant.

im sure there is a software dev kit however for it. Might want to
check that out.

well, keep in mind, its a sony consumer product…

so how “secure” it really is, is probably in question. They dont seem to
have much luck in the security dept, if their cd/dvd copy technology is ANY
indicator.

Also, this little piece o’ shit was never very expensive, and I seriously
doubt it was popular.

But based on your comment, I am going to forgo buying it.

One thing I DONT want to do, is load some bunk security software on my
machine and get locked out, because of Sony’s crappy tech.

Thanks everyone!

but you can use it for sure with [110.panther] – it
is a complete and bootable (!) OS X 10.4 emulation
object which can emulate OS X right inside MAX.

with kind regards yours
