You could try “Designing Sound” by Andy Farnell, published by MIT Press. It uses Pd for its examples rather than Max but I suspect you could ‘port’ the patches with a little effort. You can download sample chapters at aspress.co.uk

Port the patch? Thats sound more fun than just reading a book, lol.
Thanks, I’ll look forward to Andy Farnell and his book.

Edit: I find another interesting book: “Computer Sound Design Synthesis Techniques and Programming Music Technology” by Miranda.

Eduardo Reck Miranda’s book is a good general overview, as is his other book, “Composing Music with Computers”, but they won’t give you anything like a ‘how-to’ tutorial which I think Andy Farnell’s book does, although I should point out I’ve only skimmed the sample chapters of “Designing Sound”. Of course, there’s also the new book that’s being promoted on the Cycling 74 home page at the moment, “Electronic Music and Sound Design” by Alessandro Cipriani and Maurizio Giri.
By the way, Eduardo Reck Miranda is an interesting composer too, check out his CD on the Sargasso label.
