Having trouble getting a "bang" from the [sel] object in that config.
Is it a speed issue

Unless you choose the messages to line very carefully, you can't always predict exactly what numbers it will use to interpolate toward its destination value. In your example it will go to 1000 in steps of size 8 (8, 16, 24, 32, etc.), so if select is looking for any number other than a multiple of 8, it will fail. Try testing for >= instead. Revised example below.
