Try before you buy. Most professional dealers will take something
back or swap it if it doesn’t work as expected.
I used/owned lots of professional interfaces. Only a few worked well
(on Mac).

it’s good. i’ve used one for about 5 years. recently had some horrible squealing noise issues which i was able to fix by replacing the unit’s internal PSU. no other problems with unit besides that which is pretty good considering i’ve used it for at least 5 or 6 hours every day since i got it back in 2005. the conversion isn’t great sounding but its decent enough and improves drastically with an external word clock. the midi ctrl mode is awesome for controlling max projects. i use it mostly as a control surface for logic though which is where it really shines. in that application it’s like a half priced Mackiecontrol unit.

edit: oops i just noticed the original post was 3 years ago LOL

Yes, the post is old, but I only bought mine yesterday – maybe I should have taken a clue from that…
Can you fill me in on how you’re using it as a controller for Max?
Using the Firewire (‘control’) input, in ‘computer’ mode, I get usable outputs from the switches and rotary encoders, but the faders give out a hopeless mess of data. And in ‘midi’ mode, I only get an output from the transport buttons.
Presumably mdi control mode just sends data to the physical midi ports – is that how you’re using it?
I haven’t tried it as an audio interface yet, but the HUI mode for Pro Tools hasn’t impressed me much, so unless I can get it to work better with Max, I guess I’ll have to pass it on,
cheers

naw, the midi mode can be configured to output on the physical ports or over virtual ports on the firewire bus. computer mode is for interfacing with various DAWs using special sysex protocols. use midi mode to control max stuff. the setup is described in the manual which you can find here: http://www.tascam.com/i-448-232-128-0-548D88EE.pdf

Thanks, i did find that out just after posting, by reading the ‘Using with FCP’ manual; having owned a few bits of Tascam kit, i should have remembered that their manuals are not the best.
I’ve now got it configured to use with Max, and it looks to have plenty of potential. A couple of things bothering me though; is it possible to get midi back into it from Max, to control the motorised faders and/or the button LEDs.
It’s disappointing that the buttons don’t light up in Midi mode, but perhaps they need to be told to via midi? And a shame that the bank buttons don’t send midi either…
Also, having configured all the controllers to use the virtual port, I lost them all again, possibly due to accidentally hot plugging the thing (not a good idea, I know) – do you know if it’s possible to backup your settings externally eg. via a sysex dump?
I will read the manual, honest, but shortcuts are always handy ;-)
cheers
Roger

yeah it sucks but midi mode doesn’t support the use of sel/solo/mute LEDs or the motorized faders. bank button midi would be convenient to let you change your gui as the context of your controls change but alas…no such luck. i know there’s someone on this forum working out objects for the mackie control so you could search for that. you’d most likely be able to take advantage of any work they’ve done via the computer mode using the mackie control protocol.
