i had troubles with a patch which crashed randomly, at least it seemed randomly...

on windows max crashed with this error-message:

i figured out, that this was related to an error an mxj-object threw (net.multi.send)

i broke the crashes down to the textedit object.

(i used it to be able to debug in runtime-version without the status window)

there seems to be a maximum number of lines the textedit object is able to handle. the maximum count of lines depends on the length of the appended text, and the platform...

i wrote a test-patch, which writes a counting number to a file, before appending a text.

a sentence with the length of 21 characters could be appended 1024 times on a mac, and 1365 time on windows (both max 4.6.3) - a word with 5 characters could be appended 2048 time on a mac and 2731 time on windows... with a longer text, max crashed earlier.

you can avoid the crash by clearing the textedit-object...

I reproduced this crash with the info provided; I suspect it the size of and

type of text being input into the textedit object is causing a buffer

Not entirely sure how useful the run-time error message is (especially when

issued by MSVC), but the run-time error message implies that that the data

type of the function call was not known since it refers to an abstract data

type--nothing indexed in compiler-generated vtables at run-time, a property

of C++ polymorphism. Hopefully this gets fixed, handling text in different

OS's/environments at run-time can have all kinds of surprises.

I also have run into this when pasting large amounts (though not as much as your experiment) into the box. Looked like having "max lines = 0" was the culprit; maybe try setting this to a large value first, so the object knows how much to expect? This may be not what you're looking for if the size of the text isn't known.

The project was making a Max IM environment using the text edit boxes and jit.net.send. my students loved it... good thing I have a built-in control to override, or they'd never get back on track. ;) Am interested in real-time evaluation and feedback in class, and Max is great for this (can do images, screen shots, videos, etc. besides just text). It's like those "classroom clickers" times a hundred. Also, no reason to restrict it to a lab (though the Windows Firewall has proved tricky to manage).
