The tutorials that come with Max4Live need some adjusting

August 29, 2013 | 1:24 pm

I think if you’re just starting out, going through the Max tutorials introduces some quirks in Max4Live that might increase the learning curve.

I’m going through the Max Data Tutorial (Max Data Tutorial 5: List Processing) and it mentions "Double-click the noteout objects to select an available synthesizer." This doesn’t work when doing this in Max4Live. Obviously the goal is to send it to a MIDI out which (to my understanding) needs to be done differently.

I think I understand how to work around that but I think further clarification should be implemented in these tutorials for people who are still learning. I think in the beginning, it was details like this that really tripped me up.

Yeah. It’s confusing. The Max Data Tutorial 5 contains a sequencer. This sequencer is (at the moment) only working when I open a midi track, place a max midi device, open the max midi device, and then place an instrument at the end of the chain. As soon as I close the Max MIDI device, even though the device is still on the track, the audio stops. So this is rather confusing.

Is there no m4l-specific tutorials somewhere ? Indeed the Max one are more specific to Max without Live, starting with those you should quickly learn about the differences between Max/m4l in the m4l doc.

There are no m4l-specific tutorials in the package. You might find these to be of some use to you:

Vichug’s right – what you’re looking at really aren’t m4l-specific tutorials in the package. You might find these to be of some use to you:

Well, yeah they aren’t M4L specific.

However what I’m saying is it’s not clear that some of these tutorials are not M4L specific. A casual learner, with M4L will go through these tutorials have no idea that specific parts will not work on their version of Max. With that in mind, it could possibly confuse some people trying to learn even more. There should be caveats pointing out what doesn’t work in M4L. Either that or the tutorials that do not entirely work in M4L should not be packaged with M4L.
