I have a group of objects that I want to randomly distribute into six positions in presentation mode (in patching mode it doesn't matter), and my original idea was to use scripting messages to [thispatcher] to assign each of them a random offset from a dummy object (like a comment with nothing in it). Unfortunately, I discovered that those messages only change the objects' positions in patching mode, and in presentation mode they go back to where they were originally. Is there a way to script object placement in presentation mode, either using [thispatcher] or some other method?

presentation_rect messages to any object, as I recall. Or:

script sendbox [object-scripting-name] presentation_rect $1 $2 $3 $4

Note that objects with text will only size vertically to the font size and the number of lines of text in them. Also you can make non-square buttons etc., though they do look kind of funny when you do :)
