I’ve been having some trouble today with a patch I’m using for an installation. To give a very brief overview: The Jitter portion of the installation uses three USB webcams (Xbox Live Vision Cameras http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_Live_Vision) and a Kinect. (More info on how at http://physicalechoes.tumblr.com/ )

The issue I’m experiencing concerns simultaneously using multiple [jit.qt.grab] and [cv.jit.grab] objects for different cameras. When all four of these devices are connected and I’ve sent an ‘open’ message to an grabber, I select can select device in the ‘settings’ menu but it won’t get any video from the device (I might be able to get a maximum of two simultaneously before the problem starts.)

I have successfully used all four devices simultaneously before, when connecting connecting to my iMac’s built-in USB ports. Now that I’m on-site setting up this installation, I’m using a powered USB hub with my MacBook. I can use all three of the webcams simultaneously but having the Kinect in the mix makes the problem return.

I will note that I had a similar issue to this before when running all three of the webcams at their maximum resolution simultaneously (640*480) on my iMac, and solved that problem by changing to 320*240 for each.

Is it just too much for my MacBook? I’m due to be borrowing a mac Mini in time for the exhibition.

Any advice appreciated, cheers.

If the length of my post is putting people off, here’s the crux of the problem:

When trying using three webcams and a Kinect simultaneously, I can ‘open’ multiple grabbers but don’t actually get any video in for all of them.

I’m using [cv.jit.grab] objects for the cameras and [jit.freenect.grab] for the Kinect.

Maybe the usb-hub doesn’t provide enough power? Did you try with 2 cams instead of 3 or 4? Maybe you need an individual usb-port for each cam? What does the Max-Window say?

As I mentioned in the first post, I can run three cameras simultaneously but the Kinect seems to stop it. Nothing in the Max window, but the preview window in the settings menu says ‘no video from source’.

I’ve run all three webcams and the Kinect before using my iMac’s built-in USB ports. However, I couldn’t use all three webcams at 640*480, I had to drop down to 320*240.

Am I just trying to take into too much data?
