toolbox broken?

April 23, 2008 | 8:27 am

ahhh

i love max 5 so far. however when i try to load the max toolbox (e.g. http://www.imeem.com/nat/blogs/areO4MEW), i get ‘maxtoolbox.pat: can’t open, bad header.’

I know I should probably e-mail Nathanael about this but if there is a quick fix that would be even better. i need my toolbox!

quick workaround is to manually open the maxtoolbox.pat file from max, after i do that im able to use the toolbox functions.

Given some of the names on the beta list, I expect
that you’ll be seeing some of your favorite 5-ized
things as soon as is possible [although some of them
will require the new SDK which is in progress]. The
toolbox and the ejies should be in the "soon come"
category.

And Tap.Tools is already available:

There are things that will have to wait until the max5 SDK is
released. For example,
Cycling is re-doing (this is a good thing) the text-buffer/windowing
system developers
can use. What this means for now is that objects that make use of
the older system
(like [rtcmix~] and [chuck~]) can’t use the edit capabilies. The
objects work fine, but you
can’t open up a window within max/msp to edit the script buffers
(you can still load in
and edit script files on disk, however). This shouldn’t be too hard
to fix once the SDK is
out.

The [maxlispj] object works fine; it uses a java-based window/edit
system.

Hello.
Please find a temporary version that works with Max5 here :

http://www.studioimaginaire.com/nat/maxtoolbox/maxtoolbox_b9.zip

Note that this is temporary until I do some redesigns better suited for Max5.

I had to change the main connection shortcut "c" to "z" because it was interfering with Max5 shortcuts.

Actually they are, if you open ToolBox.maxpat (the patch that resides in the Extas folder) there is a button to customize shortcuts that opens a coll. Not the perfect system yet but I’ll work on it for a future release.

Regarding capital letters, unfortunately the current Max shortcuts are triggered even if shift is pressed… So it makes capitals for the Toolbox impossible for now.

I meant the shortcuts in Max/MSP, not in the Toolbox..

Yes, it doesn’t work for now, will fix that soon !

Thanks,

Also, I’d be curious to know what you use the CommandLine for ? Is it to connect objects or is it to send messages to objects (which can now be done with max) ?

Thanks,

Nat

April 25, 2008 | 4:23 pm

Mostly to connect objects. I know the hotkeys are quicker, but I like to see what I’m typing for some reason… The @ms o 3 i 2 is still something Max5 can’t do, right?

Also, here’s a wishful thinking/future updates request:

I’ve always wanted to be able to connect multiple objects, but not all from the same inlet or to the same outlet.

For example, two rows of 3 objects, connect o 1 to i 1 of first pair, o 2 to i 2 of second pair, o 3 of i 3 to third
—> @rr o 1 i 1 o 2 i 2 o 3 i 3
and if there was a fourth pair and you don’t specify an inlet/outlet configuration, it relies on the last config in the list…

Of course I can’t give you a good reason as to why I want this right now ;p, but it’s definitely crossed my mind while patching in the past…

Sorry if this conversation already happened on forum.

best,
Zachary

Thanks for the info, I was wondering if the feature was used or not. Will re-add it asap.

ill second that on the command box. I’ve been learning the hot keys in Max 5, but if i type ‘q i 2′ i get an int. ;)

Yeah, I really wish there would be a way to use shift for Toolbox specific functions…

Do you mean creating objects with command 1-9 ?
If so, I am removing this feature because Max5 includes it (see the max-keycommands.txt file in the init folder)

Is there something the toolbox did specifically you would need ?

I just pushed a new release :

http://www.studioimaginaire.com/nat/maxtoolbox/maxtoolbox_b10.zip

- Note that there is a new file : toolbox-keycommands.txt. This file needs to be copied to Cycling ’74/init
- The Command Window is back (now works with shift-r)
- The following shortcuts : i,o,n were replaced by shift-i,shift-o,shift-n
- The main connect shorcut (c in max 4) is now shift-c

Also, in Max 5 you have the ability to customize shortcuts easily. So if you would like to have ToolBox shortcuts on the main keys, just modify your max-keycommands.txt file in the init folder (you could for example put uppercase C for the comment shortcut instead of lowercase c) and then assign lowercase c to the connect feature in the mtb_shortcuts.txt file (in the ToolBox folder)

Thanks for the quick updates! Cant patch without the toolbox…

Thanks again! Love the toolbox.

Thanks again for the toolbox. Is there any way to change the key commands for the ‘i’ and ‘o’ from shift + "i" and shift + "o" to just ‘i’ and ‘o’ ? i have changed most of the other commands to the max 4 style,. these dont seem to be in the mtb_shortcuts.txt file. I have changed the builtin max 5 key commands fo that these toolbox commands shouldnt interefere, i just cant find where to change them. any help would be appreciated…

June 21, 2008 | 11:26 am

Love the toolbox and used it a lot in 4.6, will definitely utilize it in 5. I also like to type the connection codes in the Command Line (more than remembering the shortcuts), and have often used it to send messages to multiple objects (you can’t send messages to multiple objects in Max 5 easily, can you?)

Great work adapting this very clever (and probably pretty complicated) tool for the new version, there are a ton of people out there who save lots and lots of time thanks to your efforts!

Hello,
in the maxtoolbox.maxpat patch, check for the io_offset subpatcher. You can change the values in the select object at the top to your liking.

Let me know if it works for you.

Thank you for the nice words, I am glad to see the Toolbox is useful and enjoyed by maxers !
