Hi guys,

Quick question….is there any particular reason why I am unable to track infrared data using aka.wiiremote via my macbook. I thought it was something I was doing wrong with the patch….and I was researching other ways of tracking my data (osculator). Then I found that when I used the desktop Mac Pro computer at my school everything worked!!….Is there anything I could possibly do to get this to work on my little macbook laptop….

thanks..

Don’t want to sound patronising, but are you using a sensor bar? You need at
least two distinct sources of infra red light. The wii sensor bar contains
two clusters of 5 IR LEDS.

Hi,

I most likely will use the osculator……since it’s the best solution to the problem…but being an inquiring mind I was just wondering. I definitely used a sensor bar, that’s why the infrared data actually worked with the Mac Pro desktop I was working on. However, when I went to my Macbook laptop…nada. Is there anything special that the desktop has that my laptop doesn’t that prevents this part of the patch from working?…just wondering….

Nope. Works fine on my MacBook Pro. I have used aka.wiiremote and OSCulator with the Nyko Wireless Wii Sensor Bar. OSCulator definitely connects more easily. Thanks for the heads up, Kim. Sometimes aka.wiiremote doesn’t want to work for me

One thing to watch out for: the Wii remote can only connect to one thing at a time. If the Wii remote has paired with another bluetooth device (your desktop or the wii console) it will NOT connect to your laptop. If it looks connected (blue light) but you can’t receive data, maybe that’s what’s going on.

yes…especially versions of OSCulator released in 2008 which contain
enhanced bluetooth connectivity

yeah…I am not sure what the Bluetooth spec is on this…can a
single BT device connect to more than one device/host? anyone know
offhand?
it could be interesting to send wiiremote (or any BT) data to several
places at once…

Not sure. That would be interesting. I’m picturing a laptop orchestra where the conductor uses a wii remote to keep everyone in sync.

Probably the wii remote is programmed to not attempt a connection if it is already connected. Even if it is a limitation in bluetooth and not just the wii remote, someone could build custom hardware that has multiple bluetooth transmitters in it.

But maybe the best/easiest option is to send the wii data to one machine, and from there transmit it over the network to multiple places.

hmmm…I’m not familiar enough with the wii remote spec but does a
wii remote send timing data that can be split off and used as a
master clock?

yeah…or consider a group bluetooth headphones all receiving audio
data from a single source — which could be used in concert or as an
interesting sound installation piece

>
good idea and an easy enough workaround…

No. I was thinking something much more basic like button presses could indicate a section change is coming up. And detecting the downbeat with the acceleration data if someone’s waving the wii remote around like a conductor’s baton. Downbeat detection probably wouldn’t work so well in practice (too easy to miss beats?)

Probably a silly idea. I was just reading about laptop orchestras ;) But who knows, maybe 20 years from now conductor batons will come standard with wireless transmitters.
