I think I'm missing the countdown.mov default movie from the tutorial, or some other error. I can't play the movies, and am getting the "unable to create gworld" error.

I'm on Windows 7. Do not have Quicktime movie player installed but using VLC, so that might be an issue?

Yes indeed, jitter requires a Quicktime installation.
