Unexpected behavior on Windows shut down

September 3, 2006 | 11:40 am

Maybe this is expected behavior for Windows, but I found it surprising.

Summary: No ‘Save Changes?’ alert on shut down.

Steps:
1) Start Max
2) Create new patcher, add an object. Any object. Window is flagged
"dirty"
3) In the Windows Start menu select "Shut Down"
4) Select either Restart or Shut Down in the following dialog.

Expected behavior: A "Do you want to save your changes" alert come
before Max exits.
Actual behavior: Max exits without saving changes.

System: Windows XP, Max/MSP 4.6

Do Windows users expect this?

Yes, Peter, this is normal for Max on Windows. Albeit, most programs that perhaps view themselves as being important [textpad, word, ableton live] do indeed pause the shutdown sequence so you can save your file. I think Max should be updated to include this behavior. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve rebooted and accidently lost my work.
