I get an error when trying to use a String data type in a switch statement. Though this wasn't historically available, as of the seventh(?) version of Java it looks like this functionality exists...

I'm not au fait with the terminology, but is Max using a particular version of Java, or Java compiler that doesn't support this feature?

Max doesn't come with Java - you'll have had to install it at some point... sounds like you're still running 6 though - you should be able to pull up a command prompt and type 'java -version' to get your version

Hi Mike, if you are on Mac Max will only work with the old Java for OS X Package from Apple wich is not available for Java 7. So if you want to stay crossplatform compatible Java 6 is the only option unfortunately...

that's good to know, and somewhat worrying.... Java 7 is pretty long in the tooth now

kinda loses a lot of it's cross platform appeal if we're stuck with an old version...

according to c74 supporting oracle java on os x is on the list, but no dates yet...

I'm using Java partly to gain new skills in programming, and partly because it seems easy to use directly in Max. Should I consider making objects in C instead? Perhaps someone from C74 can chime in regarding any future developments for Java in Max...

Java 6 if you want to run on windows and Mac - as Jan says, lets hope that this is addressed for Max 7.

Java 7/8 definitely have some nice stuff in there, but alot of stuff is aimed at enterprise development, so can certainly be avoided.

Luckily, I've done all my Java development in 6 so far and was just about to start looking at 7/8.

I've often considered the C/C++ route myself, but the ballache of 32/64 and Win/Max cross compiles just annoys me

Jan, does this mean if I develop Max for Live devices / Max applications that use Java, and users have Java 7/8 installed, my devices won't work?

On windows they will work with java 7 or 8. on mac they will have the apple java (6) installed by default EXLUDING mavericks. mavericks, also as an upgrade, doesn't has java installed. on those machines your patch/device will not work even if they have oracle java 6, 7 or 8 installed. they will need the old apple java package.

Where does Mavericks live in the OS X timeline? if you're not a Mac user, it's a bit hard to keep track of :)

Is that newer or older, i.e. have people generally moved on from that or not?

It's the actual version. Apple doesn't publish version distributions as far as i know, but market estimations that i found vary around 70%-85% percent of all Macs running Mavericks.
