How can I make an imovie play only certain (still) frames?

Say the movie in question is 12 frames in length, and I want the imovie to display a still frame in relation to a certain integer it receives, how do I do this? I've tried using 'time $1' messages and all sorts, all I seem able to do is just play the movie from the beginning, when I don't want to play it as such at all...would I be better off using an fpic or something?
