I'm building an isntallation with minimum resources, and I need to device some form of filter for allocating people in a large room full of condensed light, and possibly estimating their z-position. Since there may be projeceted lightning between the person and the camera, this will make it difficult to estimate the human blobs.

For this, I was thinking on placing one of those home-made IR filters to the camera (handicam), but I'm not so sure if it will work. The logic behind this is to simply cut throught any reflecting surface that isn't reflecting in the IR scope. Any suggestions?

Also, is it possible at all to device some kind of z-map of the room, to estimate with a degree of accuracy the z-position of a human blob? Maybe putting the camera in a strategic position, possibly a corner with a wide angle?
