I'm interested in seeing if I can figure out a way to play my Gakken SX-150 synth (

 with a MIDI keyboard via Max/MSP, without getting it modified to accept MIDI. The Gakken has a 1/8" input, which is said to be a "frequency to voltage converter". I tried playing it by sending the output from a simple soft-synth I built in Max, through a mixer (to boost the signal) and into the Gakken. The results were neat but highly unpredictable. The volume of the signal seemed to have just as much effect on the notes coming out of the Gakken as the notes I was playing on the MIDI keyboard did.

Any tips? Is there a reliable way to do this without bringing in extra hardware?
