Using Max/MSP to fire Light Cues

December 12, 2006 | 2:43 am

Hi, I have just started to explore Max/MSP this semester and one of our projects that we are trying to accomplish is using Max/MSP respond to a room full a people who would start off being very quiet and gradually get louder. There vocals would be picked up by a microphone and that acoustical signal would be converted into a MIDI signal through Max/MSP and that signal would be sent to our expression light board. What we want to have happen is once the audience gets to a certain level a light cue will fire that will take the lights out. Now being new to Max/MSP I don’t know if this is possible our where is should even start. I thought I would ask everybody on this forum and see if anybody could give me any good ideas. I appreciate any help you can give me,

Thanks

Hi Jason,

You could get your university/school/college to buy a dmx interface
like to enttec usbpro (+ dmxusbpro externals) – I used one with a
powerbook+expression (emphasis) setup and it worked well. Maybe start
with a "dry" setup first, just your computer and a microphone, and
when you are happy with triggering events by certain features of your
sound add your dmx control as a next step. Don’t be afraid of the
tutorials, you will get to your first working patch in just a few hours.
